Jannie Otto Safaris is based in South Africa, 2 Hour drive from the Kimberley airport in the Northern Cape and a 1 hour 30 minutes drive to Sandy Mount Park form Bloemfontein Airport. We also hunt in all Provinces of South Africa and other African Countries, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique.

Length of Safari

Jannie Otto Safaris caters for safaris that range in length between 7-21 days. Hunters can be assured that on a 10-14 days safari they will return home with a good mixed bag of exciting trophies. Travelling time must be taken into consideration when hunting in different provinces for certain species of game. Jannie Otto Safaris can tailor make your safari to meet your trophy requirements. JOS’s experienced Professional Hunters will be with you every step of the way to guide you to a successful and fun safari.

The Hunting Season

In South Africa we hunt from February through November. Keep in mind that May is our autumn/fall whilst June, July and August are our winter months. September is spring with October and November going into summer. You can expect temperatures in the 40’s as a low and 70’s as a high in winter months. Mid 60’s to mid 90’s in spring and summer is average.

General Information

South Africa’s electricity supply is 220 volts AC 50 Hz. Appliances of lesser voltage require transformers and adapters.

Inoculations are not required for South Africa, however if a hunter is to hunt in other African countries, we recommend malaria and yellow fever prophylactics be taken. Please consult your medical practitioner on the subject.

Bottled water is available for drinking.

The Currency in South Africa is Rand but in all other African countries USD is accepted.

Daily Rates

Safari starts on day of arrival and ends on day of departure, considered a full safari day. Travelling days between provinces/hunting areas is considered as full paying days for hunters and non-hunters.

Day of Arrival: arrival before 12h00 midday, a full day is charged; arrival after 12h00 midday, @ $200 pp.
Day of Departure: depart before 12h00 midday, @ $200pp; depart after 12h00 midday, a full day is charged.

Arrivals & Deapartures

Day of Arrival: Arrival before 12h00 midday is considered a full day; arrival after 12h00 midday is charged at $200 per person.

Day of Departure: Departure before 12h00 midday is charged at $200 per person; departure after 12h00 midday is charged as a full day.

Rifles & Ammunition

Bring a rifle that you are most comfortable with. A heavier calibre is recommended for larger animals.
Have a document at hand that states proof of ownership and lists all inscriptions as well as a letter of invitation from JOS.
Up to 100 rounds of ammunition per rifle allowed. A 30.06, 270 and.375 are available for rent at USD50 per day, in addition to ammunition used.

Deposit Requirements & Insurance

50% of the total hunter and non-hunter daily rates and transportation fees are required at the time of booking.
The balance is due at least 30 days before the start of the safari.

Bank Transfers, cash, credit card (Master and VISA) acceptable. AMEX, DINERS CARDS and CHECKS are not accepted. Handling fee of 4% is charged on card payments. Please inform your bank you will use your card in Africa. No refunds on cancellations. Dates booked per contract will be paid for in full.
Before commencement of the safari, clients are required to complete and sign a safari contract, general information sheet and indemnity form.

Rates Include

1. Field preparation of trophies and delivery to local taxidermist for processing.
2. Full time service of professional hunters, skinners, trackers, caterers, and camp staff.
3. Accommodation includes towels, linen, and daily laundry.
4. Catering of cuisine with fresh fruit, vegetables, salads, and cooler boxes stocked daily for each hunting vehicle. Dietary requirements will be catered for as far
    as possible.
5. All soft drinks and bottled water.
6. Ground transportation in the field, i.e., one fully fitted hunting vehicle per PH.
7. Government value added tax (VAT) 15% is included in daily rates & transportation in SA.

Rates do not include (Additional charges if applicable)

1. International arrival & departure flights and any other flights, either commercial or charter to and from areas, as well as hotel accommodation before, during
   and after the contracted safari period.
2. Clients flying between areas during the safari is responsible for his own, plus one guide and one skinner’s airfare.
3. Airport transfer @ $500 per vehicle, max 4 people.
4. Additional vehicles hire. JOS use double cab hunting vehicles which can seat 4 passengers.
5. Firearm clearance fee is charged at some domestic airports @ +/- $35 per rifle each way.
6. Firearm rentals $50 per day per firearm. Ammo at cost.
7. Firearm import permit assistance (if required) @ $150 per application carrying rifles, at Johannesburg International Airport.
8. Liquor, wine, beer, and mixes @ cost + 10%.
9. Trophy charges as per price list.
10. License fees and hunting licenses & permits where applicable, $60.
11. Government value added tax (VAT) 15% is payable on trophies not exported. VAT is payable on all animals wounded & lost and/or bait/s used.
12. VAT is charged on full value of packages and donations.
13. Taxidermy and packaging, dipping & forwarding of trophies from local taxidermists to destination. This is not undertaken by JOS but by a South African Taxidermist who will deal directly with the client.
14. Other activities. The cost of any tours & sightseeing, side trips or any additions to the confirmed safari itinerary.
15. Gratuities appreciated. Recommended: camp staff – $150 per day, PH $150 per day.
16. Travelling between provinces @ $250 per vehicle.

A 15% VAT is charged on the daily rate of a hunting safari and is non-refundable. VAT is not charged on the trophy fee if the trophies are exported according to South African regulations. However, VAT is levied at 15% on dipping, shipping services, and tanning of skins if processed in South Africa. ALL HUNTING PACKAGES AND SAFARI DONATIONS, FULLY 15% VATABLE ON THE FULL AMOUNT OF THE PACKAGE/DONATIONS.

Clients are advised to bring their own firearms although these can be provided at a nominal fee. We suggest a rifle ranging from a .300 caliber upwards. For dangerous game a .375 or larger caliber is required. Please bring a good supply of ammunition with you, as it is very expensive in Africa. Firearm Permit Requirements

You will be asked to fill in a Form SAP520 which can be downloaded from our menu.

Additional Requirements along with the SAP520 are the following:

-Passport Copy
-Airline Ticket
-Proof of Ownership Firearm licenses, documentary proof (for USA Citizens, Custom –Declaration Form 4457 (officially stamped) is acceptable
-Letter of Invitation from Jannie Otto Safaris
-Jannie Otto Safaris can apply for a pre-approved Firearm Permit. $100 per application.
-Insurance.

Generally speaking, no special vaccinations or inoculations are required coming to South Africa. Jannie Otto Safaris is equipped with a basic first aid kit.

Medical doctors are within reach in the towns near the hunt area. Although malaria has been controlled in recent years, it is recommended that anti-malaria precautions be commended prior to departure. Please consult your personal physician. Bring all your personal prescription medication with, along with your doctor’s contact details in case of an emergency. Bottled water, this is readily available. The African sun can be dangerous, so wear a hat and bring good sun block.

The South African currency is the Rand (ZAR).
Cash and Credit Cards are widely accepted.
Most major banks exchange traveler’s cheques or cash, ATM’s (Automatic Teller Machines) are virtually everywhere for credit card use, and there are Bureau de Change at all airports and major centers.
Remember that the South African Rand is fairly volatile currency and the exchange rate tends to change on a daily basis.
Jannie Otto Safaris also accepts credit cards payable at all safari / hunting areas.
Please make sure to inform your credit card company that you will be using your credit card in Africa.
There is also a 2,9% fee on Credit cards.

When bringing a video camera or any other electrical appliance, please pack converters for the country you are visiting. In South Africa we use 3 pronged round hole plugs and some 2 prong round hole plugs. Electric current is 220V and is available in most camps. Hot water for baths/showers is provided in all camps.

Lightweight camouflage or khaki clothing, hats or caps, and light comfortable rubber soled ankle high walking boots are essential. Bring a warm jacket as well as clothing that can be worn layered on our cold months. It can be very cold in the morning, warming up to 80F by midday and chilly again in the afternoon. When packing for your trip, please keep in mind that laundry is done on a daily basis. Clients transferring to hunting areas by chartered aircraft should pack minimally. Also include a flashlight, reading material, binoculars, camera and plenty of film.

You can fly from Johannesburg to Beira by international airline and then drive for approximately 4-5 hours to the concession. Alternatively, you can charter a light aircraft to the concession area, price available upon request.

  • General Hunting Licenses: You need to obtain general hunting licenses to hunt in the desired country.
  • CITES Permits: CITES permits are required before trophies can be exported from the desired country.
  • Visa Application: Complete your visa application in your country of origin.
  • Required Documentation:
    • Photocopy of the first two pages of your passport
    • Details of your rifle including caliber, make, and serial number
  • Submission Deadline: All required information must reach us at least 8 weeks prior to the safari.

All trophies are field prepared (salted and dried) and included in your trophy fee. The raw trophy skins and skulls will be delivered to your choice of taxidermist or shipping agent for shipment to your preferred address. Please note that after delivery, the client is responsible for dipping, shipping, packaging, export documentation, and any other associated charges. The dipping and shipping agent or taxidermist will handle the export documentation. Due to veterinary restrictions, no raw trophies may be exported without being dried and treated. The client must also obtain CITES permits, if required, before leaving their country of origin.
